First contact
Before the design can start we want to know our client,
their goals and resources. We always analyse carefully the
land and local conditions. We never design the course using
the same pattern.
Walking the land
Walking through the site with topographical map in hand
starts the routing of the course. We map the whole area carefully
trying to find the best possible local features and
natural areas for golf holes. This is how the designer makes a
3D model of the area in his mind.
The natural features found on the site like specimen trees,
rocks and water features define the basic structure for the design.
In addition to this we notify all possible issues that could
cause problems with construction or course maintenance.
The holes that fit naturally on contours of the site
are the backbone of our design. This principle helps to create
a golf course that blends in its surroundings and is visually
appealing. Breaking the natural topography is very expensive
and usually makes the course look and feel unnatural.
Routing
We will finish the routing in the office using the topo map.
We will check it on site to ensure the fit on land and
surroundings.
The routing has to be prepared carefully because it is the backbone
of the course that makes a good course that is playable year
after year. The greens or bunkers can be changed later with
reasonable costs but bad routing cannot be fixed without doing
very extensive redesign and construction.
The plans
When routing is ready we will finish the final Master Plan
and start preparing the technical drawings.
The Master Plan shows the routing and all other functions and
facilities on the site. The plan can be used e.g. as a visual
tool for marketing purposes.
Detailed technical drawings are essential to pass the
designer's ideas for the construction team. Without proper
technical documents it is quite certain that there will be
mistakes and poor quality construction unless the designer or
his representative is willing to stand on the site all the time.
Working on site
Golf course cannot be designed only by preparing drawings in the
office. Good technical plans are a must but the best possible
design needs architect's regular guidance and supervision on site.
We will always do the final finish grading on construction site
together with the shapers.
Detailed technical drawings are essential in earth moving and
contour shaping work. In addition to this we will do
regular inspections on site to ensure the quality of the work.
We want to discuss and solve problems on site as soon as possible.
This is invaluable especially when having a low budget project.
We always use common sense when an expensive surprise is found
on site during construction.
Team work
Golf course design is always a product of the team work, not just
a vision of a single designer. A good co-operation between the
architect and construction team is always behind every
successful project.
"A good golf course is exciting and fun to play.
It fits the land and gives the pleasure and excitement for every
level of players.
It challenges top players, is fun and interesting for middle
handicappers and offers learning experience for beginners."

"My goal is to design interesting courses that enable
the player to use different strategies off the tees and
be creative when approaching the green."
